About OSFED

Women with OSFED don’t meet all of the criteria for specific eating disorders. For example, they don’t meet the guidelines for doctors to diagnose them with bulimia or anorexia. However, they do have some of the symptoms, and those symptoms interfere with their ability to live their lives. They need the same treatments as those who have specific eating disorders. Fortunately, they can get these services at an OSFED treatment center like Magnolia Creek.

OSFED stands for other specified feeding or eating disorders. Previously, experts referred to it as an eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). They developed the category to encompass people with significant eating problems that are inconsistent with existing disorders.

For instance, experts can’t diagnose anorexia in those with restricted eating habits but normal body weight. As a result, there are five subcategories of OSFED. These include:

Purging disorder differs from bulimia because people don’t binge before they purge. With night eating syndrome, they eat most of their food during the night. Sometimes, urges to eat interrupt their sleep cycle.

Although some experts consider OSFED to be a less severe condition, it has serious, life-threatening effects. However, the disorder is treatable.

What to Expect at an OSFED Treatment Center

The first step toward recovering from OSFED is to confirm the diagnosis at a treatment center. The facility will utilize a team of professionals to treat the many aspects of the problem. The team will include a physician, dietitian, case manager, and therapist.

After diagnosing OSFED, the treatment center will relieve the symptoms and correct any related medical conditions. It also restores eating patterns to normal. For instance, some women are dangerously underweight because of malnourishment. Since that affects their mental health, therapy won’t be effective until they return to a healthy weight and eating habits.

Then, an OSFED treatment center will use therapy and other services to teach women about nutrition. In addition, it will address ongoing health problems as it encourages behavioral and mental changes. Finally, the facility will help them develop a relapse prevention plan to follow after treatment.

OSFED Treatment Programs and Services

Treating other specified feeding or eating disorders can occur in more than one setting. Most of the time, experts recommend residential and partial hospitalization programs (PHP). In general, women in these programs don’t require intensive medical assistance. However, these programs have some differences that they should consider.

PHP Overview

For PHP, an OSFED treatment center allows women to keep going to school and work while they get treatment. They visit the facility at scheduled times throughout the week for therapy or other services. Because of this freedom, a PHP is ideal for women who aren’t at any immediate risk from their eating disorders. They might not function well in normal situations either and require daily assessment and support.

Residential Programs

Getting residential treatment for other specified feeding or eating disorders requires living at the treatment facility. It provides a structured environment for women with co-occurring mental illnesses. For instance, they could be dealing with depression, anxiety, or trauma alongside their eating disorder. As a result, a PHP won’t be as effective until they attain mental stability.

Treatment Services

An OSFED treatment center uses a range of treatments. Not all women face the same challenges or respond the same to certain treatments. In order to address their differences, the facility creates treatment plans that incorporate the services that will work best. For example, some of the evidence-based services that are available include:

Nutrition therapy is a major part of eating disorder treatment as well. In addition, the facility uses experiential therapies to address more than just the eating problem. Some examples include art therapy, animal-assisted therapy, adventure therapy, mindfulness therapy, and guided imagery.
