What is the social and economic impact of an eating disorder?

In collaboration with the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) and Deloitte Access Economics, a 2018-2019 Harvard report has provided evidence of the devastating impact of eating disorders.

Prevalence of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are a serious, sometimes fatal, psychological disorder that impacts over 28 million Americans each year. Of this 28 million, over 14 million are females and 6 million are males. This report has also discovered that over 1 million of eating disorders occur in children or adolescents under 10 years of age. While recovery is certainly possible, still, over 10,000 people die from complications as a result of eating disorders each year and unfortunately, this death toll continues to rise. a.

Financial Impact of Eating Disorders

Individuals suffering from eating disorders are often likely to access health services from mental health professionals, physicians, nutritionists, and even hospital-based systems. The yearly economic cost of seeking professional care is upwards of $64 million, which also includes pharmaceuticals, research, and higher levels of care.  According to this recent Harvard report, an estimated $4.6 billion was the total health system costs associated with eating disorders in 2018-2019.  Otherwise Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) accounted for the largest share followed by Binge Eating Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa.
