Healthy You: Eating Healthy on the Road

Whether it’s a business trip or a family vacation, road trips can often lead to food choices that are quick. Balancing traveling and healthy nourishment can be a challenge. Here are some tips that will help you enjoy your trip and still make healthy choices.

  1. Plan ahead. Stock up on travel-friendly food that is nutrient-dense and non-perishable. Fruit, nuts, and beef jerky may be great to have with you for ease and nutrition.
  2. Eat every 2-3 hours. It is important to ensure your body is continually nourished, even while on the road. Just like you would do while you were at home or at work, making sure you eat meals and snacks every few hours will keep your body functioning at its best.
  3. Read your airline menu. We often jump on a flight and think a small bag of nuts or pretzels are our only options. Many airlines offer protein boxes with hummus, olives, and whole-grain crackers, all of which provide a balance of protein, fat, and grains.
  4. Drink more water. Drinking water will not only prevent dehydration but contribute to raising your energy levels.
  5. Know where you are going. Enjoy the surroundings and know that it is okay to eat out. Trust that your body will be able to navigate what you consume on your trip. It is good to enjoy yourself, and it is also okay to be intentional in your planning so that you feel comfortable with whatever may be in front of you.
  6. Eat breakfast. We all get caught up in the whirlwind when we travel, but slow down and eat breakfast. This meal helps prepare you for the day ahead. Choose high protein options such as eggs or whole grain toast with peanut butter to give you added energy.
  7. Stay active. If it is safe for you to engage in exercise at this point in your recovery, continue your pre-planned exercise regime while on vacation. Just make sure that you are continuing to nourish yourself to balance out what your meal plan has allotted for exercise. Also, remember to get adequate sleep.
  8. Enjoy yourself. Do your best to continue balancing healthy nourishment and activity on your trip. But remember, whether it is for work or play, it is important to enjoy yourself.

Knowing you have a plan and are nourishing your body can alleviate some of the anxiety associated with traveling. Enjoy yourself on your trip and take care of you!
