A Closer Look At Binge Eating Statistics

Binge Eating Statistics

Binge eating disorder is more prevalent than anorexia and bulimia combined. It is currently estimated that 2.8 million people in the United States alone suffer from this disorder.

BED is defined by consuming excessive amounts of food at one time. Many people who suffer from BED feel as though they have a loss of control during a binge episode.

Individuals with binge eating disorder will often feel embarrassed or ashamed of their eating habits and symptoms can sometimes be hard to notice. The main symptoms of binge eating disorder can include emotional and behavioral signs such as:

  • Recurrent episodes of binge eating (characterized by consuming a large amount of food in a discrete period and a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode)
  • Eating more rapidly than normal
  • Eating until uncomfortably full
  • Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
  • Eating alone (due to shame about how much one is eating)
  • Feeling disgusted, depressed or guilty after eating
