The Resilience Factor: 7 Keys to Finding Your Inner Strength and Overcoming Life's Hurdles
What is Resilience?
Resilience is the ability to withstand, recover and/or grow in the face of stressors and changing demands (DCOE, 2010). Developing resilience includes building self-regulation, connectedness, problem-solving, optimism, fortitude, hardiness, and general life skills. At Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders bolstering these skills is a part of our treatment program for all clients.
Magnolia Creek's Integration of Resilience
Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders developed its program on the University of Pennsylvania’s strengths-based approach by Dr. Martin Seligman. This approach focuses on identifying and capitalizing client strengths. Using the University of Pennsylvania’s resilience model, and integrating features from the US Air Force and Army models, Magnolia Creek’s treatment program centers on four core domains of well-being: Nutritional/Medical, Spiritual, Mental/Psychological, and Social.
Magnolia Creek utilizes evidenced-based treatments for eating disorders to build resilience in our clients. Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy are integrated into the resilience model, which builds the framework for each client’s recovery. Utilizing interventions from these approaches, clients build resilience by finding purpose, practicing awareness, developing connections, and learning to adapt to changing circumstances.
In collaboration with the United States Army and the University of Pennsylvania, our Suicide Prevention and Risk Consultant, Dr. Bartlett, is a certified Master Resilience Trainer. She brings this training into her work to guide our treatment team in capitalizing on these skills to best serve our clients and their families, as they work to remediate their eating disorders and build constructive life skills.
