Former clinical director is appointed to a newly-created position to focus on suicide prevention among the eating disorder population.
BIRMINGHAM, AL (8/20/2010) - Eating disorders have one of the highest suicide rates of any psychiatric disorder. (Harris and Barraclough, 1997). Based on the high correlation between eating disorders and suicide, Magnolia Creek is collaborating with internationally renowned suicidologist Dr. Thomas Joiner to investigate risk factors for suicide and self-harm in the eating-disordered population. Dr. Bartlett will serve as the coordinator of this research for Magnolia Creek.
Dr. Bartlett was chosen for this new position based on her extensive training and experience in the area of suicide prevention. In addition to a doctorate in counselor education and licensure as a professional counselor, Dr. Bartlett is an authorized trainer for the American Association of Suicidology and Suicide Prevention Resource Center, as well as a board member of the Alabama chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Alabama Army National Guard Suicide Prevention Task Force. She speaks internationally on suicide prevention, clinical assessment of suicidality, and related topics.
Dr. Bartlett notes that, "the creation of this position not only reflects the forward thinking of the Magnolia Creek team, but further evidences our commitment to the quality of services we provide to clients. Self-harm and suicide are pervasive issues in this population that many providers are undertrained or afraid to address directly. At Magnolia Creek, we not only address the eating disorder, but core thoughts including suicidality, that if left untreated can prolong and complicate long-term recovery. This administrative change enriches our distinction as a premier center for the treatment and recovery of eating disorders."
