Creekside Communications Blog - fundraisers

November 15, 2011 - 3:24pm

On Sunday, November 15th, staff members, family, and former and current clients (and Joey!) represented Magnolia Creek in the Birmingham annual Out of the Darkness Walk at Heardmont Park.

Team members raised $370 toward our $1,000 goal. Through volunteer work coordinated by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, another $1,619.22 was raised making a total team fundraising amount of $1,989.22 for the Creek.

The event hosted a total of 1,300 walkers, surpassing its goal to raise $120,000 to support families who have lost a loved one to  suicide and to support suicide prevention research. The state of Alabama receives back 50% of money collected to support localized efforts within our  state.

Thanks to all who walked or supported Creek members who did. It was a  beautiful day - we all worked to save lives!

Last week, I was on vacation in New York with my sisters and it just so happened to be the same weekend as their national NEDA walk.  Since my middle sister and I are both recovered from eating disorders, we made a point to walk in celebration of our recovery,  in support for those at Magnolia Creek in treatment, and for those who need to seek treatment.

When we arrived at the walk I was excited to see my friend and colleague, Jenni Schaefer, who sang her new song, "It's OK to be Happy" for the crowd of supporters. It was good to see Lynn Grefe, the Executive Director of NEDA, who made a point to ask about some Magnolia Creek alumnae with whom she was able to work at the last NEDA conference.

It was a time of hope, remembrance, and celebration, and I felt so fortunate to share it with my sisters.
