Creekside Communications Blog - bucket list

August 2, 2011 - 11:38am

We recently put out a call on Twitter to our alumnae to contribute things they've checked off on their bucket list. This one from SB in St. Louis is one of the most joyous I've received. A deep and heartfelt congratulations, SB! Hope we get to see a picture of the little one come November.

Since I left Magnolia Creek on Jan. 31, 2010, I've crossed a few things off my bucket list, including graduating with my masters degree in communication from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. But the most significant milestone occurred earlier this year, when I found out I was pregnant with my husband's and my first child.

This is no small feat, considering that I didn't get a normal period (without the aid of birth control) from 1994 to 2009. Miraculously, I started back on a regular cycle just a week after walking through the doors of Magnolia Creek. Since discharging, I've maintained a healthy weight and cycle, but was afraid that I had damaged my reproductive system too severely to be able to conceive.

positive pregnancy testOn March 30 of this year, I discovered I had been wrong. I endured two months of extreme nausea (during which the only palatable foods seemed to be Chinese and pizza) and subsequently gained enough weight to cause my OB/GYN to exclaim in surprise, "OH! You HAVE gained weight!" Still, I didn't let it derail my recovery - I just trusted that
my body was doing what it needed to do to support the pregnancy. Since the nausea subsided, I have been able to eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise moderately, and for the first time I can remember, am eating intuitively without obsession or fear. If that means having pizza for breakfast (which it has, on a fairly regular basis!), so be it. My doctor says both the baby and I are healthy and doing great, and that's all I care about.

ultrasoundLast week we found out we are having a baby boy on or around Nov. 26. I can't even begin to wrap my head around the life changes that parenthood will bring, but I am confident I will be a good mommy to our son. I am grateful to the staff and the friends I made at Magnolia Creek for helping me reach a place in my life - physically and mentally - where these miracles could unfold. After struggling with ED for more than 15 years, and three stints in residential treatment, I was convinced that I would never recover. Thankfully, my time at MC proved me wrong.

At the balletA few weeks ago, I received an email from MB, one of our former clients in New York. She generously shared with us her bucket list item of returning to a dance class after a year in recovery and even attached a photo. We are so proud of you!

On wednesday I went to ballet for the first time in years! It was so great, I was so scared to go back in there and be critical of myself but I wasn't. I felt free and truly enjoyed it for the first time since my eating disorder began. It felt like a wonderful acknowledgment of how far I've come in my recovery. I am so grateful that I'm able to experience the joy in it again and I have you to thank.

UAB Color GuardWith the school year starting up again, we thought we'd to share this piece of uplifting news.

A few months ago, The Birmingham News published an article chronicling one of our former resident's recovery from anorexia. We are happy to report that KW has checked off quite a few items on her "bucket list," as she is now serving on the UAB Color Guard, in addition to having re-enrolled in school and secured a part-time job.

Congratulations, KW! We love you.

I always love hearing from former clients, and this new request for Bucket List completions has brought in some really wonderful responses. Here's what FM from New Braunfels, TX had to contribute. Thank you so much for sharing, and we really do hope you manage to make it to an Oprah episode!

Oh, my sweet Bucket List!!! I recently went back over my Bucket List and was surprised at how many things I have done without any REAL conscious effort! I am still working at most of them, but because Oprah is quitting her show, I probably won't make it to her "Oprah's Favorite Things" show.

That is a bit of a downer. I have attached pics. I hope you get them!! I will keep you updated on the progress.

  • Gone to the Holocaust Museum in D.C.
  • Saw the Washington Monument, White House and Lincoln Memorial in D.C. (see pic)
  • Gone to NYC (see pic outside FAO Schwarz)
  • Took a picture with a very cool Korean lady in New Jersey. Yes! (see pic)
  • Bought the bottom half of my bikini to wear in the Caribbean
  • I am teaching in Special Ed (Middle School- yikes!) as I have always wanted to. We actually are doing a bucket list next week, and we do Mad Gabs for a classroom warm-up every day!! Thanks MC!
  • I laugh FAR more than I used to.
  • I cut my hair very short!! Coloring it is next (maybe in time for Alumni Reunion!!)
  • I went to a Broadway Muscial (The Lion King) (No pics! They were not allowed.)
  • I wore a sleeveless and backless dress to a wedding! (see pic)

One of my favorite things to do at Magnolia Creek is to have our clients make out a "bucket list" to focus on once they are out of treatment. If you don't know what the term means, a "bucket list" is a list of 100 things you want to accomplish before you die.

I've asked our clients to email me each time they complete something on our list. We've started a page on the website under our "News" section called "The Bucket List" which lists all of the bucket list items our clients have checked off and told us about.

L.H. shared with us three of her bucket list accomplishments, and sent us some pictures to share.

  • I went sky diving.
  • I got a tattoo of a hummingbird and the words "care free" in Hebrew.
  • One of my goals was to speak out for eating disorders, and I have written a 1-Act play about life in treatment and a feature film about a young woman struggling in recovery and finding her own voice, a scene from which I shot.

Thank you for sharing your bucket list items with us and for inspiring us. And don't forget to keep us posted on the rest of that list!
