Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders Suicide Prevention and Risk Consultant, Dr. Mary Bartlett, attended an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) on Sept 28 and 29th, in Springfield, OH.

She is now trained in the ASIST approach which is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize and review risk, and intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. It is by far the most widely used, acclaimed and researched suicide intervention training workshop in the world. Over one million caregivers have participated in this two-day, highly interactive, practical, practice-oriented workshop

The workshop is for all caregivers (any person in a position of trust). This includes professionals, paraprofessionals and lay people. It is suitable for mental health professionals, nurses, physicians, teachers, counselors, youth workers, police and correctional staff, school support staff, clergy, and community volunteers. Dr. Bartlett now adds this training to her myriad of experience that benefits clients at Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders.

Summer is usually a time for fun in the sun, but here at Magnolia Creek, we've been keeping busy! Here are just a few things we've been up to, along with some links for some extra summer reading:

We've teamed up with the Manna Scholarship Fund to offer a total of 90 days of treatment to a needy individual.

A generous silent donor has offered to match any funds donated to Manna up to $45,000 before August 15, and Magnolia Creek will donate a 45-day stay for a potential total of 90 days of eating disorders treatment. For more details, read our recent press release. And, please, please visit the Manna Scholarship Fund website, and donate to this worthy cause. Your dollars will automatically be matched, and double in value.

We're beginning a collaborative study on eating disorders and suicide with an international expert.

Magnolia Creek will be working with Dr. Thomas Joiner, Jr.'s research team to conduct studies exploring the relationship between eating disorders and suicide, as well as self-harm. We hope that this study will help us and other treatment providers come to a greater understanding of individuals who are affected by eating disorders and thoughts of suicide and offer them better quality treatment and care. For more details, read our recent press release, and contact Magnolia Creek directly with any questions.

We've recently published articles in the IAEDP & Alabama Counseling Association Newsletters.

Check out our new Contributed Articles page to read two recently published articles written by associate therapist Sarah Moorad, clinical director Dr. Mary Bartlett, and executive director Dr. Nicole Siegfried. We've also listed here other articles that have been contributed by various members over the past three years.

Stepping stones

Magnolia Creek is excited to announce the opening of our Partial Hospitalization (also known as "day treatment") Program today.

Partial hospitalization is designed for clients who are stepping down from inpatient or residential care or for clients who require a higher level of care than outpatient services are able to provide.

PHP Highlights

  • The program will typically run from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm on Monday through Friday. Clients whose families are participating in Tuesday evening programming will stay until 8:30 on Tuesdays.
  • As clients progress, they may step down to a 4-day a week program. If they require additional support, there is also a Saturday option.
  • Clients will be assigned a primary therapist and are expected to participate in both individual and group therapy. They will also meet regularly with the program’s medical director, nurse, and dietitian.
  • The program includes 2 meals a day plus snacks at Magnolia Creek. Clients will receive nutritional guidance, cooking instruction, and grocery vouchers to prepare evening and weekend meals.
  • Group and individual outings are regularly scheduled for PHP clients. There will also be "challenge activities" assigned during evenings and weekends as part of the treatment plan.
  • The PHP Program Coordinator is Lynn Eastman, RN. The program's medical director is Dr. Iona Shirley.

Get Rhythm drummers

I thought it was high time to post on the blog myself and share a little bit about some of what goes on at Magnolia Creek. Last Wednesday night at the Creek was our third Drum Circle with John Scalici from Get Rhythm Programs.

What an amazing experience!

John teaches that drum circles can be used as a metaphor for many aspects of recovery, including empowerment, overcoming struggle, and connection.

I’d never participated in a drum circle before, so I was a little apprehensive- thinking that we might have to yell out war calls or worse yet- perform a solo :). I was surprised as to how relaxing drumming can be. I expected it to be kind of loud and overwhelming, but it was more centering and comforting.

My favorite part was when one of the residents played a rhythm of recovery, symbolizing her triumph over the eating disorder. She used an ocean drum, which makes sort of a humming/purring noise, as a metaphor for the balance she wants to have when she recovers.

If you live in the area, John told us that he has a community drum circle one Saturday a month in Homewood. We’re thinking it would be really cool to do this as an outing!
