Eating Disorder Services Bloom at Magnolia Creek

Initial success and positive feedback from residents prompts eating disorder treatment center to expand operations and services.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (8/16/07) - Despite the sweltering heat of Birmingham's record-breaking summer, the residents of Magnolia Creek Residential Treatment Center For Eating Disorders are blossoming. The facility opened in April to a handful of residents in a limited capacity, and their promising treatment experiences are leading the center to expand operations to their full capacity of ten beds.

"She's like a new person," reports the mother of a 21-year-old former resident, "I don't know where she or us [sic] would be if were not for Magnolia Creek." Residents and their families praise the center's small treatment environment and multi-disciplinary approach, which addresses medical, psychological, nutritional, spiritual, and relational needs. Magnolia Creek is also launching several new initiatives, including an After-Care Program to serve newly discharged residents living in the Birmingham area and an outpatient treatment office to treat individuals with eating disorders who require a less intensive level of care.

"We are excited to provide additional services to our residents, as well as branch out to a wider population," says Nicole Siegfried, PhD, clinical director. "Not everyone suffering from an eating disorder needs residential care, and it does not make sense to turn away clients seeking outpatient care only to have their condition worsen to a level where it would require residential treatment."

Eating disorders continue to be a growing problem, as evidenced by recent news articles that have reported the increasing number of women over the age of 30 seeking treatment for eating disorders. Nearly half of Magnolia Creek's residents have come from this age group. As the only residential treatment facility in Alabama, Georgia, or Tennessee exclusively devoted to adult women with eating disorders, the center aspires to bring much needed hope and healing to this rising but underserved population.
